Summary:

Stud Pattern or PCD consists of two components, the number of studs on the hub by the diagonal spacing between them. For example, a 5×100 stud pattern consists of 5 studs, with a diagonal spacing of 100mm.

Correct stud spacing must be measured diagonally to the centre of the stud, you can not simply measure the distance between the studs. Imagine a circle that runs though the centre of each stud. The stud spacing measurement is the diameter of this virtual circle.
