PC Entry Level Direct Drive Sim Racing Build
THE SMART ENTRY POINT TO DIRECT DRIVE SIM RACING
Our PC Entry Level Direct Drive build is centred around the MOZA R5 bundle, delivering 5.5Nm of direct drive torque in a compact and affordable package. Yes, cheaper direct drive options exist if you dive into the second-hand market — but that quickly becomes a mixed bag of outdated hardware, unknown wear, and limited support. This build focuses on buying new, buying supported, and buying into a platform that makes sense long term.
At 5.5Nm, the R5 delivers the core benefits of direct drive — smoothness, responsiveness and cleaner force feedback detail — without demanding a heavy cockpit or large dedicated space. It’s manageable on a desk or folding rig, yet still strong enough to feel like a meaningful step up from belt or gear-driven systems.
Just as importantly, this isn’t a dead-end purchase. The broader MOZA ecosystem offers stronger wheelbases, additional rims and accessories if you decide to go deeper down the sim racing rabbit hole. This platform provides a clear upgrade path without forcing you to replace everything all at once.
wheelbase:
Moza R5
The MOZA R5 delivers 5.5Nm of peak torque and represents one of the most accessible true direct drive options on the market. At this output level, it’s not about brute strength — it’s about stepping into the core benefits of direct drive: smoother rotation, faster response, and more communicative force feedback details compared to belt and gear-driven systems.
In our testing, the R5 stands out for how refined it feels relative to its price. It avoids harshness or excessive grain that can sometimes show up in lower-end direct drive systems, and its compact form factor makes it particularly well suited to desk setups or lightweight rigs. The included table clamp is practical, and the smaller housing allows you to position the wheel closer to your monitor without awkward mounting compromises.
Importantly, MOZA didn’t cheap out on the quick release. The R5 uses the same NRG-style quick release design found on higher-end MOZA bases, with minimal flex and a solid connection. That matters, because the huge range of wheels in the Moza ecosystem will likely be something you want to utilize.
While 5.5Nm does have its limits when it comes to extreme immersion and outright realism, it delivers more than enough dynamic range for new direct drive users to feel significantly more of what the car is doing underneath them. For an entry-level PC build, it strikes a strong balance between cost, performance, practicality and future upgrades.

Pedals:
Moza SR-P Lite (Bundled)
Pedals – MOZA SR-P Lite (with Performance Kit Option)
The SR-P Lite pedals included in the R5 bundle are a simple two-pedal set using hall sensors on both throttle and brake. Out of the box, they’re functional but clearly entry level. The brake in standard form is very linear, without the progressive resistance you’d expect from higher-end load cell systems, which can make consistent threshold braking more difficult.
This is where the Performance Kit becomes important. The upgrade introduces a spring stack and elastomer combination that adds a second stage of resistance, creating a more defined braking threshold. It doesn’t transform the pedal into a true load cell experience, but it meaningfully improves modulation and consistency compared to the stock configuration.
The lightweight construction makes them practical for desk setups or folding cockpits where extreme brake forces aren’t realistic anyway. Over time, serious drivers may want to step into a full load cell system, but as an entry-level solution — particularly with the Performance Kit installed — they provide a usable and upgrade-conscious starting point without inflating the initial cost of entry.
This is realistically the first part in this build that you will want to upgrade, but being a PC build, you can use any brand of Sim Racing pedals if you decide to upgrade down the track. Your MOZA Wheelbase and accumulated wheels and accessories will still be fine. But because of the great value found in this bundle, the SR-P Lite pedals are a good starting point.

Steering Wheel:
Moza ES (Bundled)
The MOZA ES wheel included in the R5 bundle is a 280mm D-Shaped rim designed to keep cost down and provide versatility without feeling like a toy. The outer rim uses a textured synthetic leather, while the internal structure and shifters are aluminium. In hand, it feels more solid than you’d expect at this price, with minimal flex or torsional play when paired to the R5 base.
The magnetic shifters are a highlight. They provide a clean, positive engagement that feels far more deliberate than the soft microswitch paddles often found at entry level. The button layout is straightforward, giving you enough inputs for common in-car and menu adjustments without overcomplicating the design.
For an entry-level direct drive build, the ES wheel does what it needs to do. It’s versatile, solid for the price, and appropriately matched to the torque and positioning of the R5 without inflating the cost of the package.
Being in the Moza ecosystem you have now unlocked a huge range of natively compatible wheels to suit different driving styles and budgets.
You can also upgrade your system with Moza’s 70mm Bolt patter Wheel-Side Quick Release allowing the use of third-party wheels to any Moza wheelbase. This is for mounting only, connectivity to your PC will need to come through a USB cable or wireless connection depending on the wheel.

COCKPIT Considerations:
Which cockpit or mounting solution you go for will depend on your personal situation significantly, and the best value option for you could be heavily influenced by shipping costs. So with that in mind, here are some consideration for making the decision.
Desk Mounting:
The MOZA R5 bundle works very well for an office desk mounted system. But Keep in mind any shaking or wobbling of your desk is directly proportional to the loss of energy and detail coming through to your hands. There are significant benefits from an upgrade to a wheel stand or cockpit and doing such should be a priority for serious Sim Racers.
It is also very important for your pedals to be still. With the standard bundled pedals, you can drive with them on carpet or tiles, but you will want to at least have your pedals up against a wall or some bricks to stop them sliding. Similarly, you will want to ensure your seat is not rolling away when you brake. Putting an office chair’s wheels inside a shoe is the quickest solution for this, but you may find a chair without wheels or a tilting function is better suited until you can upgrade to a cockpit.
WHEELSTAND:
For the lower end of Direct Drive Wheelbases, most quality wheel stands will handle the torque levels without issue, but rigidity is still key. Any flex in the stand will reduce detail and overall feel, especially if you upgrade to a load cell brake or stronger wheelbase.
A good wheel stand is a practical steppingstone, but if you plan to stay in the hobby long term, a full cockpit will always deliver the best overall experience at the cost of a much bigger footprint.
At the end of the day, the best option is the one you are most likely to get out and use often, without having to jump through hoops to fire it up for a quick drive.

COCKPIT:
If you are serious about getting the most out of your gear, a proper cockpit is the single biggest upgrade you can make. Stability, seating position, and overall rigidity all directly affect how much detail you actually feel from your wheelbase and pedals.
There are three main categories to consider: fold-out rigs, tubular steel cockpits, and aluminium profile cockpits.
Fold-Out Cockpits
Fold-out cockpits are designed around convenience. They are ideal if space is limited and you need something that can be packed away when not in use. For lower torque wheelbases, they can work well, but once you move into stronger Direct Drive systems and load cell pedals, flex can become noticeable.
They are a clear step up from a desk or basic wheel stand in terms of driving position, but they are still a compromise. The main advantage is practicality. If it folds away easily and gets used more often, that matters.

Aluminium Profile Cockpits
Aluminium profile rigs are the gold standard for rigidity and adjustability. Built from extruded aluminium sections, they allow near unlimited fine tuning of wheel position, pedal placement, seat mounting, shifter mounts, and accessories.
They are the most future-proof option. If you plan to move to higher torque wheelbases, motion systems, or heavy hydraulic pedals, this is the platform that will handle it without complaint.
The trade-off is size, cost, and permanence. They take up space and are not something you casually move around the house.
At the end of the day, the right cockpit is the one that matches your space, budget, and long-term plans. The more rigid the platform, the more performance you unlock from your hardware.
