PlayStation High-End

15Nm of Direct Drive Performance for PlayStation

The PlayStation High-End build centres around the Fanatec GT DD Extreme, delivering up to 15Nm of peak torque — a game changing increase over the 8Nm mid-range configuration.

Paired with the CSL Elite V2 pedals while we wait for the newly announced Podium Pedal set, this build moves firmly into enthusiast territory. It assumes secure cockpit mounting and a driver who wants the strongest, most detailed experience currently available within the PlayStation ecosystem. While PC titles can ultimately push hardware even further, this represents the upper tier of practical console sim racing performance.

wheelbase:

Fanatec GT DD Extreme

The GT DD Extreme delivers up to 15Nm of peak torque, placing it comfortably above the 8Nm mid-range category. The extra torque headroom is less about outright strength and more about operating margin. With more available overhead, the motor is less likely to clip or saturate under heavy load, which helps preserve detail during fast direction changes and sustained cornering forces. The result is force feedback that feels more stable and less compressed when you lean on it.

The ClubSport GT DD Extreme also supports FullForce, now implemented in Gran Turismo 7. This introduces a higher-frequency layer of detail over the traditional force feedback signal, adding more texture through kerbs and surface transitions. While PlayStation titles still do not offer the same simulation depth as leading PC platforms, FullForce does allow compatible hardware to extract more nuance from GT7 than previous-generation bases.

At 15Nm, mounting becomes a practical consideration. This is not a desk solution, and even lighter wheel stands can struggle at higher output levels. A rigid stand at minimum — and ideally a dedicated cockpit — is required to use the available torque properly. For PlayStation users wanting higher torque and greater dynamic range without moving to PC, the GT DD Extreme represents one of the most capable options currently available.

Pedals:

Fanatec CSL Elite V2

For this build, the CSL Elite V2 pedals make more sense than stepping up to the ClubSport V3. The Elite V2 already delivers strong load cell braking performance, a solid construction, and good adjustability without introducing unnecessary cost and complexity. In terms of on-track performance, they are fully capable of matching the demands of any console racer.

While the ClubSport V3 technically sits higher in Fanatec’s current range, long-term user feedback has been mixed, particularly around durability. And in my opinion, The performance difference is not significant enough to justify the jump in price, especially when the Elite V2 already provides consistent, pressure-based braking.

With Fanatec’s Podium pedals announced but not yet released, it may be more sensible to run the CSL Elite V2 now and wait for what appears to be a genuine next-generation high-end option. For a PlayStation high-end build today, the Elite V2 strikes a practical balance — strong performance, solid construction, and fewer compromises — without investing in what may ultimately be an interim step.

Steering Wheel:

GT DD Extreme (Bundle)

The GT DD Extreme wheel is a 300mm round rim designed specifically for the ClubSport DD+ platform with Gran Turismo 7 integration in mind. Its diameter provides appropriate leverage over a 15Nm base, helping keep steering inputs stable under sustained load. The shape makes it versatile across GT cars, road cars, and general circuit racing rather than being locked into a single discipline.

The control layout is extensive, with multiple rotary encoders, thumb encoders, toggles, and a central LCD display. In Gran Turismo 7, this allows direct access to tuning adjustments and on-the-fly changes without reaching for external controls. The integration is clearly PlayStation-focused and works well within that ecosystem.

In terms of construction, it is functional and appropriately matched to the torque output of the base, though it does not reach the material quality of Fanatec’s higher-end standalone rims. Some plastic elements and button feel reflect its bundled positioning.

As part of the Fanatec ecosystem, this wheel is not a closed path. It provides a highly versatile starting point while leaving room to expand into more specialised GT, Formula, or rally-style rims over time. Given that it is only available as part of the Gran Turismo DD Extreme bundle, it makes sense within this build, serving as a capable all-rounder now without limiting future wheel upgrades.

COCKPIT Considerations:

If you are serious about getting the most out of your gear, a proper cockpit is the single biggest upgrade you can make. Stability, seating position, and overall rigidity all directly affect how much detail you actually feel from your wheelbase and pedals.

There are three main categories to consider: fold-out rigs, tubular steel cockpits, and aluminium profile cockpits.

Fold-Out Cockpits

Fold-out cockpits are designed around convenience. They are ideal if space is limited and you need something that can be packed away when not in use. For lower torque wheelbases, they can work well, but once you move into stronger Direct Drive systems and load cell pedals, flex can become noticeable.

They are a clear step up from a desk or basic wheel stand in terms of driving position, but they are still a compromise. The main advantage is practicality. If it folds away easily and gets used more often, that matters.

Tubular Steel Cockpits

Tubular rigs are generally the best balance between price, rigidity, and ease of setup. A well-designed tubular cockpit can comfortably handle 15Nm of torque, along with load cell pedal sets.

They typically offer fixed mounting points with some adjustment for seating position, wheel height, and pedal angle. While not as infinitely adjustable as aluminium profile, they are far more rigid than fold-out options and are often the sweet spot for console racers who want a permanent setup without going full industrial.

Aluminium Profile Cockpits

Aluminium profile rigs are the gold standard for rigidity and adjustability. Built from extruded aluminium sections, they allow near unlimited fine tuning of wheel position, pedal placement, seat mounting, shifter mounts, and accessories.

They are the most future-proof option. If you plan to move to higher torque wheelbases, motion systems, or heavy hydraulic pedals, this is the platform that will handle it without complaint.

The trade-off is size, cost, and permanence. They take up space and are not something you casually move around the house.

At the end of the day, the right cockpit is the one that matches your space, budget, and long-term plans. The more rigid the platform, the more performance you unlock from your hardware.
